Cowboys WR Cole Beasley serves as in-game assistant play-caller
Did you know that over the Dallas Cowboys' final five games of the 2014 season, including the postseason, wide receiver Cole Beasley saw more total targets than Dez Bryant? Beasley has emerged as a reliable target who knows how to get open in tight spots. Some would say that makes him a quraterback's best friend.
According to Cowboys offensive play-caller Scott Linehan, Beasley might have played a role in some of those extra targets coming his way. Linehan and Beasley regularly discuss the game plan and offensive plays calls throughout the course of a game. This is not something Linehan regularly does with any other Cowboys skill position player.
“He’s so smart and instinctive that he’s able to give you really good information on game day,” Linehan said, per the Dallas Morning News. “He doesn’t wait until the second half to say, ‘By the way, when we run this formation, they’re covering me like this’… That’s the back and forth you got to have in games. I think he’s one of the best at it.”
On Wednesday, Beasley told Cowboys reporters about a play from Week 2 in the 2014 regular season where he offered Linehan a great tip and it worked out in the Cowboys' favor.
“We had been running stuff all day, and I told them on third down I could run up and run out and it would be an automatic first down,” Beasley said, per the Dallas Morning News. “We called it and we completed it and it was a first down.”
Beasley made his move and picked up a cool 10 yards and the first down.
Beasley finished the 2014 season as the Cowboy's No. 2 option in the passing game. Earlier this offseason, we broke down why Beasley will see an expanded role in 2015. You can find that analysis here.
