Reds GM hopes to deal Chapman before Winter Meetings

Published Nov. 19, 2015 2:20 a.m. ET

There has been plenty of trade rumors surrounding the Cincinnati Reds and their rebuilding, especially with their All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman.

After the San Diego Padres dealt Craig Kimbrel to the Boston Red Sox, the market is somewhat set for a move. The Sox sent four prospects over to San Diego for Kimbrel, who has multiple years left on his contract, as Chapman has just the 2016 season left.

It was reported earlier that the Reds were looking to deal their flamethrower as soon as possible, but now it looks like the team will look to move him before the Winter Meetings:

The annual Winter Meetings, known as the incubator for free agent signs and trades, take place in Nashville on December 6-10.

Chapman, widely regarded as a top one-or-two closer in the game, is coming off a dominant season. Carrying a 1.63 ERA, the lefty struck out 116 batters in just 66 1/3 innings, saving 33 games.

The market for Chapman should be plentiful. There are teams with immediate needs at closer, but teams looking to build a "superpen" could certainly be vying for Chapman's services.
