Titans' tight end depth making for tough choice

The Tennessee Titans have a decision to make at tight end and Chase Coffman and Phillip Supernaw aren't making it easy on them.

The duo, who are competing to be the fourth tight end on the roster behind Delanie Walker, Anthony Fasano and Craig Stevens, both had productive evenings in Thursday's preseason finale against the Minnesota Vikings.

Coffman continued his strong play in the preseason, catching four passes for 59 yards. In all, the six-year veteran had 12 receptions for 189 yards and two touchdowns in the Titans' four exhibition games.

“There’s always a couple of things you can think back on, but I’d like to think I had a lot of great opportunities and made the most of it. We’ll see,’’ Coffman said, per the team's official website. “I am so grateful just for the opportunity to make those plays. This is the first place they have fed me the ball like that and it’s a lot of fun.

“I’ve had sleepless nights before and I’ve been cut...We’ll see what happens (Friday) and see whatever they decide.”

Supernaw had two catches for 17 yards and a touchdown against the Vikings. The excitement of reaching the end zone was somewhat sullied though, by a botched attempt to spike the ball, as it slipped out of his hand.

"I actually haven’t heard a congratulations on the touchdown yet,’’ Supernaw said. “All I’ve heard is heckling on the spike. When you do something like that you expect to catch some, I guess.

“That actually wipes away the touchdown in my eyes because that was terrible. So terrible.”

Left tackle Taylor Lewan, one of the players giving Supernaw a hard time for his failed spike, said the 25-year-old made a strong impression during training camp. Supernaw finished the preseason with nine catches for 96 yards.

“Supernaw really let it go,’’ Lewan said of the spike. “A poor man’s (Rob) Gronkowski trying to get it done, you know what I am saying?  The guy’s a stud though. I love that guy. He is absolutely awesome. That guy’s energy and fire every single day, that’s what you want on your team.”
