Steelers to be without multiple starters vs. Chiefs

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Pittsburgh Steelers are all kinds of banged up going into their game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Going into Sunday Night Football at Heinz Field, with the Chiefs and Steelers are dealing with significant injuries. Kansas City continues to be without Justin Houston and could very much be looking at another week of rest for Jamaal Charles. We will know more for the Chiefs with their injury report coming out on Friday afternoon.

Pittsburgh has already listed its injury report, and it is full of names that you should be familiar with. The Steelers have already listed inside linebacker Ryan Shazier, wide receiver Eli Rogers and guard Ramon Foster as OUT for the contest. Foster is a quality left guard, while Rogers has stepped up considerably in the absence of Martavis Bryant (year-long suspension). Rogers has caught nine passes for 100 yards and a touchdown, providing a nice third option.

However, the big name is Shazier. He’s the best defensive player on Pittsburgh, utilizing great speed to both stop runs and provide coverage on tight ends and backs. The third-year man out of Ohio State is leading the Steelers with 20 tackles and an interception. Without him, defensive coordinator Keith Butler will have some work to do.

As aforementioned, we are waiting on an official report out of Kansas City. However, we do have news that both Marcus Peters (illness) and Phillip Gaines (knee) are on the practice field. The Chiefs will need both these guys to shut down a prolific Pittsburgh offense, so this is huge.

We will continue to update throughout the afternoon.
