Report: Cam Newton will start for Panthers vs. Browns Sunday

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will start on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, according to a report by NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Newton was involved in a major traffic accident less than two weeks ago, suffering two transverse process fractures in his back. He sat out last week's game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he was able to practice this week without incident.

The Panthers, despite their ugly 5-8-1 record, are still very much alive for a playoff spot as they're just 1/2-game behind the New Orleans Saints for first place in the NFC South. Newton should be able to play through the injury as it is just an issue of pain tolerance. Tony Romo suffered a similar injury earlier this season and also missed just one game.

The Browns also have a slim chance at a playoff spot and could very much decide to amp up the pressure on Newton, who could have his mobility limited due to the injury.
