Source: Eagles sign Lane Johnson to five-year contract extension
The Philadelphia Eagles signed former first-round draft pick Lane Johnson to a contract extension on Friday. FOX Sports NFL Insider Mike Garafolo reports that the Eagles and Johnson have agreed to a five-year extension that could pay him up to $63 million.
The Eagles drafted Johnson with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Johnson was installed as the starter at right tackle in the first game of his rookie season. Since, he has stayed at right tackle for the most part, but he has also seen some snaps at left tackle whenever left tackle Jason Peters was out with injury.
Johnson has earned strong grades as a run blocker in all three seasons since he entered the NFL, per Pro Football Focus. When filling in for Peters at left tackle in 2015, in Weeks 9 and 10, Johnson struggled in pass protection. However, the Eagles may still have plans for Johnson to eventually shift over to left tackle -- Peters is entering his age-34 season.
The Eagles have been very active so far this offseason. Before extending Johnson, they also came to terms on contract extensions with tight ends Zach Ertz and Brent Celek.
