GM Reese's comments cloud Victor Cruz's future with Giants
New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz announced Monday that he will undergo season-ending surgery on his calf, and after a lost season, his future with the Giants seems uncertain at best.
Cruz tore his patellar tendon in Week 6 of the 2014 season and hasn't appeared in a game for the Giants since. After missing the rest of this season, he will have played in just six of the Giants' last 32 regular season games.
Cruz's contract is the major hurdle that remains ahead of him and his future with the team. He will finish out the 2015 season earning $6 million and he is scheduled to earn $8 million in 2016. Cruz's 2016 salary cap number is $9.9 million, and with just $3.8 million in dead money remaining from his signing bonus, the Giants will save $6.1 million in cap space by releasing him this offseason.
Giants general manager Jerry Reese spoke with the media on Monday, and he had this to say about Cruz's next attempt at a comeback to the NFL:
Reese does not regret placing Cruz on injured reserve/designated to return list when the calf injury first happened or at any point until now because the team doctors believed he would return to action in less than eight weeks.
Nonetheless, it's difficult to imagine Cruz returning to the Giants at his scheduled salary. He will likely be asked to accept a pay cut, and it will be up to Cruz to decide which team he wants to attempt a comeback for at a reduced salary.
