Colts' Coby Fleener not worried about contract

Coby Fleener enters the final year of his contract with the Indianapolis Colts with a pretty compelling argument to make.

Fleener's 129 receptions through his first three seasons are the most of any Colts' tight end in team history. For a franchise that has featured the likes of Hall of Famer John Mackey and one of Peyton Manning's favorite targets, Dallas Clark, that's quite an accomplishment.

Last season, Fleener and Dwayne Allen, also a pending free agent, became the first pair of tight ends in NFL history with at least eight touchdown receptions each for the same team.

Both Fleener and Allen join T.Y. Hilton as key members of the Colts' offense in the last year of their contracts. Keeping everyone beyond this season may be difficult, but the former second-round pick in 2012 said he's more concerned with perfecting his craft than he is with his contract.

“I’m not worrying about that,’’ Fleener said, via Indy Sports Central's Mike Chappell. “This year for me is just about making sure every single play is done correctly. At this point in my career, there should be no more mental errors.

“It’s easy to say, but hard to do."

The 26-year-old Fleener has been unquestionably productive, with 14 touchdown receptions through his first three seasons, but said he's focused on eliminating occasional miscues, like dropped passes.

“There’s stuff that anybody who’s watching the game can pick out,’’ Fleener said. “(Dropped passes) are probably the most frustrating because everybody can see them.

“Your flubs are aired in front of the whole world. Whether you’re sitting at a desk all day or whether you’re playing football, nobody wants to make the ‘Not Top 10.’ Unfortunately I’ve been there and I’m trying to limit that as much as possible.’’

With the offseason arrival of free agent running back Frank Gore and wide receiver Andre Johnson, along with the selection of receiver Phillip Dorsett in the first round of April's draft, there is some question about whether the Indianapolis offense will be as tight-end friendly as it has been in recent years.  Fleener believes it will be, although he acknowledges there will differences.

“I think it still is,’’ Fleener said. “But I think our offensive game plan is going to change. We just have more weapons out there to do it with different personnel."
