Ravens' Steve Smith calls Chip Kelly's Eagles practices 'apple juice'

Ravens receiver Steve Smith Sr. would much rather have been at home with his wife celebrating her birthday than practicing with the Eagles in Philadelphia on Wednesday. Instead, he decided to poke fun at the length of Eagles coach Chip Kelly's practice sessions.

A little background from Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com: The Ravens were on the field for a half hour before the Eagles showed up. The teams then practiced jointly for two hours. Baltimore hasn't had a practice shorter than two hours and 45 minutes this training camp. Monday's practice in Baltimore lasted three hours with the heat index as high as 111 degrees.

And now Smith's take: "There's no chatter about how his practices are. Have you heard about our practices? Exactly. We're three hours. This 2:15 man, this is like apple juice. It's great."

Apple juice. Regardless of how much easier the practice was, Smith still wishes he was home.

"Today's my wife's birthday, so I'm not at home," he said. "I'm over here doing this bull**** and missing my wife's birthday. That's my honest opinion. I'd rather be at home singing happy birthday to my wife."

To be fair, Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer said the Eagles were not working at their usually brisk pace, even huddling on offense during the first few series. The teams will meet again Thursday for their second of three joint practices leading up to Saturday night's preseason meeting at Lincoln Financial Field.
