Tom Coughlin impressed with where the Giants' offense is at

In the final month of the 2014 season, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning admitted that it took him until then to finally feel comfortable in Ben McAdoo's offensive scheme. Learning a brand new system was one thing, but the Giants and Manning also dealt with multiple injuries to their projected supporting cast on offense. As the Giants make their way through OTAs, head coach Tom Coughlin has noticed something different about how the offense is now operating.

The holdovers on offense are no longer making simple mistakes with terminology. This will allow McAdoo to explore some new possibilities on offense.

"We are way ahead," Coughlin said, per Giants 101. "The familiarity as the different installations go and the familiarity by the players, at least the guys that have been here, so what we are talking about here is obvious. There is an awful lot of information being thrown at them. They seem to being handling it well. Some of the new guys have done well with it. I haven’t seen a lot of issues with that. It is natural. They have heard it. They have played it. They have been involved with adjustments. As we do more and more adjusting, they are picking that up as well."

The new arrivals, like running back Shane Vereen and wide receiver Dwayne Harris, have also done an excellent job picking up an offensive scheme not very similar to the one they each previously played in.

"It is obvious you throw an awful lot at them – the young guys are doing okay. Progress is being made and this is what [OTA’s]are all about. Throwing them in there and letting them go. See how they do," Coughlin said.

The Giants' offense should take a major step forward in 2015 if they can stay relatively healthy at the skill positions. The additions of Shane Vereen and a hopefully healthy Victor Cruz will bring more consistency and success on the early downs. It will be interesting to see what kinds of new plays, personnel packages, and formations McAdoo feels comfortable throwing at Manning and the offense as we move through the offseason.
