Report: Denver cops arrest 12, pepper spray crowds after Super Bowl
The Denver Broncos won Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday night, and not surprisingly, the fans back home took to the streets to celebrate in the early hours of Monday.
And also not surprisingly, the police were in full force to deal with the crowds.
According to the Denver Post, following the Broncos’ 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers, Denver police closed the streets leading into downtown, then used pepper spray to disperse crowds and, as of 12:45 a.m. local time, arrested 12 people.
According to the report, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said the arrests were on charges of “criminal mischief, starting fires and throwing things at officers,” along with two people reportedly arrested on gun-related charges.
There was no report of injury to officers, though one police cruiser’s window was shattered as trash cans and patio furniture was overturned during the reveling.
"Overall, things went pretty well," Jackson told The Post. "There were a handful of people who were somewhat unruly."
Police did take to the streets in riot gear and moved along the streets in large groups; some people said they actually appreciated the ramped-up police presence while others said the increased show of force was not necessary.
"Both sides were acting ridiculous, but it hyped it up a lot more," Dominic Dincola told The Post. "I mean the Broncos did just win the Super Bowl."
