Yates last played for the Houston Texans in 2015 playing in six games and starting five. He had 82 completions on 134 attempts with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He has been in the league six years although this will be the first time he has been with a club in 2016.

In his career, Yates has started a total of seven games.

Drafted by the Texans in the 5th round of the 2011 draft out of North Carolina. He made his first start for the Texans late in the year. His first game was a win giving the Texans a 10 win season and advanced them to the playoffs where Yates would win the franchises first ever playoff game.

Following the 2013 season, Yates was traded to the Falcons but was released during the final cuts of the 2015 season. Yates would join the Texans in October after the team released Ryan Mallett.

It was thought that the Dolphins would simply sign 7th round pick and practice squad quarterback Brandon Doughty but it is obvious now that the team may not feel he is ready just yet.

The Dolphins will play the New York Jets on Saturday night in New York.
