The New England Patriots’ stunning trade for Colts tight end Dwayne Allen signaled that they likely will not bring back free agent Martellus Bennett.

And it appears Bennett clearly has gotten the message.

The veteran tight end took to Twitter on Wednesday night to say goodbye to Patriots fans, adding some humor to soften the blow.

The Patriots acquired Bennett from the Bears for a fourth-round pick last offseason. The move proved to be critical for New England, which lost star tight end Rob Gronkowski to a back injury in November.

Bennett had 55 catches for 701 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns in his lone year with the Patriots, helping New England win its fifth Super Bowl title.
