7 players the Packers must move on from in 2016

The Green Bay Packers need to revamp their roster this offseason. In order to bring in fresh talent, they need to first part ways with the players who have grown stale.

The Packers have few bad contracts on the books, so there probably won't be a player who gets cut for the cap savings. All the players on this list have contracts expiring this spring and may not be back in Green Bay for the 2016 season.

The Packers must move on from the following seven players.

1. James Jones

The Packers were lucky to reunite with Jones in 2015, but they'll be in trouble if he's playing the same role next season. Although he led the team with 890 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 50 catches, he leaves a lot to be desired as the team's No. 1 wideout. Jones will turn 32 in March and would have little hope of making the team, assuming Jordy Nelson makes a full recovery from his knee injury.

2. B.J. Raji

Another holdover from the 2010 Super Bowl team could be hitting the road this offseason, as Raji is nearing free agency and his 30th birthday. He did a good job bouncing back from a torn biceps that cost him the entire 2014 season, but the Packers need a more dominant player at nose tackle. Some team will overpay for Raji, while Green Bay begins its search for a younger, healthier replacement.

3. Casey Hayward

Hayward isn't a bad cornerback by any stretch of the imagination, but his return is not likely. He's sure to garner plenty of attention on the open market, so he'll be expensive to retain. Meanwhile, behind Sam Shields, the Packers have much cheaper options in Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins and Ladarius Gunter. They will be better off moving forward with the young guys and letting Hayward sign a big deal elsewhere.

Packers cornerback Casey Hayward has some young playmakers pushing him out.

4. Nick Perry

Perry was a first-round draft pick in 2012, but he has been a disappointment since joining the team. With 12.5 sacks in four seasons, he's not much of a difference-maker. Perry only started one game in 2015, while fellow outside linebacker Mike Neal started all but one. Both players are slated to become free agents this spring; if the Packers can only afford to retain one, they should give preference to Neal.

5. Andrew Quarless

Quarless was a nonfactor in 2015, as a knee injury limited him to just five games played. He caught four passes for 31 yards after eclipsing 300 yards in each of the previous two seasons. In his absence, fellow tight end Richard Rodgers recorded 58 receptions for 510 yards and eight touchdowns. Quarless has never put up those kind of numbers, so the Packers should be in no rush to re-sign him this offseason.

6. Don Barclay

The Packers had an offensive line crisis this season, and Barclay did little to alleviate their issues. When he was called upon to start at left tackle against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 16, the results were disastrous. He gave up four sacks and committed three penalties in the 38-8 loss. Although Barclay was a serviceable starter in 2013, he did not look like the same player after missing the entire 2014 season with a torn ACL.

7. Sean Richardson

Richardson only played in five games, as he landed on injured reserve with a neck injury in mid-October. He already had spinal fusion surgery after suffering a similar injury in 2012, so this new injury could spell a premature end to his career. Richardson, a former undrafted free agent, is only 25 years old.
