Redskins' Jay Gruden: Deangelo Hall going to be starter at CB

Published Jul. 30, 2015 4:05 p.m. ET

After sitting out all of the Washington Redskins' spring practices, cornerback Deangelo Hall is on track to suit up for the first practice of training camp. When he steps on the field, he expects to be a starting cornerback again, and head coach Jay Gruden has confirmed that this will be the case.

At 31 years old, doctors were extremely impressed with Hall's recovery from the second career procedure to his Achilles, and how he looks now. Hall ruptured his Achilles in Week 3 of the 2014 season, and Bashaud Breeland stepped in as the team's starting cornerback across from David Amerson.

“To be able to go out after two surgeries and for the doctor to tell me how great I look and how amazing a recovery I’ve had so far, it’s a blessing,” Hall said after the morning walkthrough at the Bon Secours training facility, per CSN Washington.

It now seems likely that both of the Redskins' starting cornerbacks from 2014 will no longer be starters in 2015. Hall will be joined in the starting lineup by big-ticket free-agent acquisition Chris Culliver. Breeland and Amerson will likely be fighting for the nickel cornerback spot.

According to Hall, he has felt healthy for months now, but the coaching staff asked him to play it safe and wait until the start of training camp before getting back on the field.

“Even in OTAs and minicamp, I felt really good,” Hall added. “I felt like I could have went out there and made some plays. So I’m excited to get out there. I’m kind of champing at the bit. It’s going to be a fight back there in the secondary. You know me, I’ve never shied away from a fight. I’m ready to bring it.”

Hall and Culliver make for a much more imposing starting cornerback pair than Breeland and Amerson ever did. Add safeties Dashon Goldson and Jeron Johnson to the mix, and you've got a much better secondary on paper than at any point in 2014.
