Report: Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo could miss Thursday's game vs. Texans

UPDATE 9:25 p.m. ET: Garoppolo may be back sooner than expected. Reports emerged later Sunday that the injury was a sprained right AC joint, and that the team would be taking it "day-to-day."

Original story below.

With Tom Brady suspended for the first four games of the season, all eyes were on Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

He clearly liked the attention.

Garoppolo was stellar in his five-plus quarters of play as the Patriots' starting quarterback this season — Sunday in the Patriots' win over the Dolphins, he was 18-for-27 for 234 yards and three touchdowns in just the first half.

But a Kiko Alonso hit in the second quarter brought the Eastern Illinois product down on his shoulder in a bad way, chasing him from the game and bringing in rookie Jacoby Brissett.

It looks like the Patriots are going to have to ride on the rookie for the next two weeks.

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, citing sources, is reporting that Garoppolo will be ruled out in Week 3 and could miss Week 4's game as well.

Brissett, who played at Florida and N.C. State and was the 91st pick in the 2016 NFL Draft was 6-of-9 for 92 yards against Miami, as the Patriots had a big lead and tried to run the ball for almost the entirety of the second half.

The Patriots do not have a fourth quarterback or one on the practice squad, so if Garoppolo does miss next week and beyond, the team will likely sign a quarterback in the coming days.
