Redskins Sign Nick Moody In Wake Of Inside Linebacker Injuries

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

With Will Compton and Su’a Cravens potentially sidelined by various injuries, the Washington Redskins made a move to add an inside linebacker. They signed Nick Moody to fill the void.

On Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Washington Redskins suffered a couple of key injuries. Middle linebackers Su’a Cravens (elbow) and Will Compton (knee) both went down and were declared week-to-week by head coach Jay Gruden following the contest. On Tuesday, the Redskins made a move to add a new linebacker and signed Nick Moody off the free agent market.

Moody is a fourth year player and a former sixth round pick out of Florida State. He has played 23 games in parts of three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks. In 2014, he played in all 16 games for the 49ers and recorded 16 total tackles. He demonstrated decent ability as a depth player, but the 49ers elected to part ways with him due to promising young players at the position.

Since the 2014 season, Moody has only played in three games. He was placed on injured reserve by the Seahawks after having a minimal impact. The team elected not to bring him back for a second season.

Moody was also suspended for the first four games of this season for a violation of NFL policy. He also failed to testify in former teammate Aldon Smith’s hit and run, per Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper, and that landed him in some hot water. Moody eventually showed up, but it did raise some red flags for the teams interested in signing him.

For the Redskins, it is likely that Moody was just signed as an insurance policy. They may have him active for depth purposes in Week 15, but he is likely just to be the fourth linebacker on the depth chart. Mason Foster, Martrell Spaight, and Terence Garvin will see time ahead of the recently added player. That said, Moody could see some time on special teams and may have an impact in that area.

Essentially, this move is just to ensure that the Redskins are not shorthanded at the linebacker position. It seems likely that Moody will only be on the roster for a couple of weeks at the most. He is not a long term option for the team, but in the short term, he could be a decent enough depth player.
