Amukamara: If we were on the field today, I would definitely be there

Prince Amukamara appeared on Giants Insider to chat with John Schmeelk about a number of topics facing Amukamara and the team this offseason. After missing the final eight games of the 2014 season due to a torn biceps injury, his recovery was the most paramount issue and Amukamara didn't waste any time providing an update. You can exhale now Giants fans, because Amukamara is well ahead of schedule on his recovery.

"So far I haven't been limited to doing anything in the weight room," he said. "If we were on the field today, I would definitely be on the field."

This is great news for the Giants as Amukamara had really emerged as a plus cornerback in 2014, his fourth season in the NFL. According to Pro Football Focus, opposing quarterbacks had just a 58.2 quarterback rating when targeting him in coverage last season. Although he missed eight games and logged only 464 total snaps, he finished as Pro Football Focus' 24th-highest rated cornerback overall in the NFL.

Now, Amukamara will be transitioning to a brand new defensive scheme under new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. From what he has heard from everyone around him, this is excellent news.

"From McClain (Jameel), T2 (Terrell Thomas), and Webster (Corey), all those guys speak highly of him (Spagnuolo). They told me he likes to play man (coverage). I'm going to love playing with Spags."

When asked about how good the defense can be, Amukamara pointed to what he believes is the most important factor.

"The name of the game is to be healthy. If everyone is healthy, we can be pretty good."

He's got a point there. In 2014, the Giants broke the NFL record for the most players placed on injured reserve in one single season. They had broken their own record from the 2013 season. If this defense can stay healthy under Spagnuolo, it's unlikely to remain as one of the league's worst again in 2015.
