Colorado Rockies Rumors: Mark Trumbo Free Agency Update

Mark Trumbo is back in the news today, thanks in part to some bad news he received from the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. Could that bad news turn into good news for the Colorado Rockies as the calendar keeps ticking toward 2017?

According to reports, the Orioles rescinded their offer to Trumbo on Saturday. The sides had at least come together to agree on a four-year contract, but there was still a big discrepancy in money. The slugging first baseman is reportedly looking for around $70 million while the Orioles were looking at closer to $52 million.

The Rockies recently signed Ian Desmond to a five-year, $70 million contract and have proclaimed him to be their first baseman. However, there are still plenty of murmurs that Colorado is still actively looking to land Trumbo.

Trumbo would provide the right-handed power the Rockies have so desperately needed in recent years. His signing would also theoretically set a domino effect in motion, with Desmond moving to the outfield and the Rockies trading Charlie Blackmon or Carlos Gonzalez.

Last year’s MLB home run leader, Trumbo is one of several slugging first basemen still looking for a new home. He joins Edwin Encarnacion, Mike Napoli and Chris Carter as power-hitting first basemen wanting to land big contracts for their services.

Speaking of signing contracts in the offseason, all six of Colorado’s free agents from the 2016 season are still looking to find new homes as well. Desmond’s signing seems to have closed the door on Mark Reynolds’ time in Denver, so he joins the list of first basemen trying to sign contracts before spring training.

There was talk that Baltimore might be interested in Nick Hundley, but the Orioles scored a catcher when they signed former Arizona catcher Welington Castillo to a contract. Hundley could still come into Baltimore as a backup, especially with Matt Wieters now out of the picture.

Meanwhile, there has been little talk of substance involving Colorado’s five other free agents (Reynolds, Daniel Descalso, Ryan Raburn, Jorge De La Rosa and Boone Logan) from last season and where they might land.
