New Mexico snaps nation's longest conference losing streak at 14 with 42-21 win over Hawaii
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Dylan Hopkins threw three touchdown passes and New Mexico beat Hawaii 42-21 on Saturday, snapping the nation's longest active conference losing streak at 14.
The Lobos (3-4, 1-2) also won a home conference game after 20 straight Mountain West losses in Albuquerque dating to 2017. Meanwhile, Hawaii (2-6, 0-3) has lost its last 10 road games.
The Lobos scored 14 points in each of the first two quarters in taking a 28-14 halftime lead. Hopkins threw touchdown passes to Jeremiah Hixon and Ryan Davis in the first quarter and Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Andrew Henry rushed for second-quarter scores. They led 42-14 before Hawaii scored in the final seconds.
Hopkins was 20-of-25 passing for 202 yards. Hixon had two touchdown catches and 62 yards receiving. Henry rushed for 112 yards on 13 carries. Croskey-Merritt ran for two TDs.
The Lobos made their first three interceptions of the season, two by Jer'Marius Lewis.
Brayden Schager was 33-of-52 passing for 345 yards with two touchdown passes to Steven McBride and one to Pofele Ashlock along with the three picks. McBride finished with 75 yards receiving. The Rainbow Warriors, last in the FBS in rushing yards per game at 57.7 coming in, finished with 58 on 15 attempts against the Lobos.
