Chemistry lessons: Roster overhauls make offseason bonding activities more critical in portal era

Establishing team chemistry in college football is tougher than ever with so many players not staying at the same school for four years
1 DAY AGO • Associated Press
Evan Wysong - Practicing in spring Wysong has been a full go in spring, per The Albuquerque Journal.
Impact Wysong appears to be good to go as the Lobos' spring camp has been underway. The 5-foot-9 wide receiver missed the entirety of New Mexico's 2025 season with an undisclosed injury, so this news is promising for his availability in the 2026 campaign.
APRIL 7 • ROTOWIRE
Tripp Walsh - Standing out in spring Walsh is standing out in New Mexico's spring practices, per the Albuquerque Journal.
Impact Walsh, who transferred over from Iowa State this offseason, has just two career catches for 20 yards. However, he could be trending towards making an impact in his redshirt sophomore season with the Lobos.
APRIL 7 • ROTOWIRE
Troy Omeire - Sitting out spring ball Omeire (undisclosed) isn't participating in New Mexico's spring practice period, per The Albuquerque Journal.
Impact Omeire is a non-participant in the Lobos' spring practice period, but the wideout is expected to be cleared by the summertime, which would in theory have him ready for fall camp. The senior receiver reeled in 31 catches for 514 yards and five touchdowns last season at UNLV.
APRIL 7 • ROTOWIRE
Toa Fa'avae - Seeing reps in spring Fa'avae is seeing reps in spring practice, per KRQE News 13.
Impact Fa'avae played in one game as a freshman with New Mexico, and logged one carry for two yards. However, with starter Jack Layne largely sidelined this spring due to elbow surgery, Fa'avae and Luke Moga are seeing more reps. Still, Fa'avae should be the Lobos' QB3 this fall.
APRIL 7 • ROTOWIRE
Luke Moga - Seeing plenty of first-team reps Moga is handling much of New Mexico's first-team quarterback reps as starter Jack Layne recovers from elbow surgery, per KRQE News 13.
Impact Moga completed 3-of-5 passes for 58 yards last season as a redshirt freshman, also rushing for 49 yards on three carrires. Layne is still expected to be the starter when the season rolls around, but this extra experience with the starters could be valuable for his development.
APRIL 7 • ROTOWIRE
Jack Layne - Not throwing much in spring Layne is recovering from an elbow injury and isn't throwing much in spring practice, per
Impact Layne reportedly suffered a torn flexor tendon in his elbow in Week 3 of the 2025 season against UCLA, but played through it the rest of the year (albeit not particularly well) and received surgery in the offseason. That's limited his involvement in spring camp, but the gunslinger, who still tossed for 2,486 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season on 65 percent completion, will have to wait until fall camp to get more involved in the Lobos' practices.
APRIL 7 • ROTOWIRE
Kiefer Sibley - Transfers to New Mexico Sibley will transfer to New Mexico, the program announced.
Impact Sibley spent his first two seasons at North Texas, and was a rotational part of the Mean Green backfield, logging 44 and 45 carries in his freshman and sophomore seasons, respectively. Last fall, he ran for 274 yards and five scores, and he'll now take his talents to the Lobos where he should become a factor in the backfield immediately.
APRIL 7 • ROTOWIRE
Cameron Mathews - Heading to New Mexico Mathews has committed to New Mexico, he announced via X.
Impact Mathews will make the switch from Memphis to New Mexico as he approaches his sophomore season. The 5-foot-8 running back still has a lot to prove at the college level, as he appeared in just one game with the Tigers this past campaign.
MARCH 4 • ROTOWIRE
Troy Omeire - Dealing with knee injury Omeire suffered a knee injury that could limit him during spring practice, Sean Reider of the Albuquerque Journal reports.
Impact New Mexico's spring training starts on March 27, which gives Omeire a couple of more weeks to get back to full strength as he tends a knee injury. The senior wide receiver transferred in from UNLV, where he posted 31 receptions for 514 yards and five touchdowns during the 2025 season.

Troy Omeire - Signs with New Mexico Omeire will transfer to New Mexico, per Chris Hummer of 247Sports.com.
Impact Omeire is coming off a productive year at UNLV in which he reeled in 31 catches for 514 yards and five touchdowns. The wideout also played for Texas and Arizona State, where he notched 25 catches for 282 yards and three touchdowns at the latter program. He'll take his talents to the Lobos with one year of eligibility remaining.

Keagan Johnson - Ten targets, four receptions Johnson totaled four receptions (on 10 targets) for 42 yards during Friday's 20-17 overtime loss to Minnesota.
Impact For only the fourth time in 2025, Johnson logged double-digit targets. During all but two of New Mexico's games this year, he recorded several receptions. In total, Johnson logged 59 catches (on 102 targets) for 754 yards and three touchdowns, all career-high tallies.
DECEMBER 29, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Damon Bankston - Versatile during bowl Bankston accrued 10 carries for 57 yards and gathered in all five targets for 23 yards during Friday's 20-17 overtime defeat to Minnesota.
Impact New Mexico played a competitive game, and Bankston played a part with production in three facets. For a third consecutive game, he logged 10 carries. The running back tied his season-high in receptions and recorded his second game with 100 kick-return yards and a touchdown. For 2025, Bankston logged 114 rushing attempts and 31 receptions for more than 1,000 all-purpose yards and exactly eight TDs.
DECEMBER 29, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Jack Layne - Unimpressive during bowl Layne was 14-for-25 passing for 88 yards and one interception during Friday's 20-17 overtime loss to Minnesota. He also had 10 rushes for two yards.
Impact For 2025, Layne transferred colleges from Idaho to New Mexico for his first season of FBS football. To go with four rushing touchdowns, he logged 213 completed passes for 2,486 yards and 13 TDs. However, Layne barely completed more than 65.0 percent of 327 pass attempts for a 13-10 TD-INT ratio, significantly worse than the 14-4 he logged during Idaho's 2024 season.
