Vikings welcome Zimmer back to practice after eye surgery

Published Dec. 6, 2016 6:34 p.m. ET

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer has returned to practice with the team following surgery to repair a detached retina.

Zimmer wore a white patch that was taped over his right eye as he roamed the indoor field Tuesday and instructed players as usual. The 60-year-old Zimmer had to miss the game against Dallas last week because of the emergency operation, one of multiple procedures he's had over the last six weeks. The Vikings announced that Zimmer is expected to travel with the team for the game Sunday at Jacksonville.

Missing from practice for the Vikings was safety Harrison Smith, who was on crutches with a boot on his left foot after the last game. Center Joe Berger (concussion) and punt returner Marcus Sherels (rib) were back on the field.
