Eagles' Miles Austin playing a larger offensive role than expected
When the Philadelphia Eagles signed veteran wide receiver Miles Austin this offseason, many wondered if he was a good bet to make the roster. Seven weeks into the season, he has become a staple on offense thanks to injuries and inconsistent play from the rest of the Eagles' wide receiver corps.
In the Eagles' Week 7 27-16 loss to the Carolina Panthers, Austin played a team-high 60 offensive snaps. He played more snaps than Jordan Matthews -- the second year wide receiver expected to take a major leap in 2015. Austin finished with 52 yards receiving and four receptions on six targets.
The Eagles' wide receiver corps has been unable to find any consistency through seven games. Dropped passes, injuries, or both have plagued receivers Riley Cooper, Nelson Agholor, Jordan Matthews and Josh Huff. Austin's increase in playing time started in Week 6 and it could continue after the Eagles' Week 8 bye.
