Jets place wide receiver Devin Smith on PUP, cut 11 players
NEW YORK (AP) The New York Jets have placed wide receiver Devin Smith on the reserve/physically unable to perform list and released 11 players, including kicker Ross Martin.
Smith is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered last December, ending a disappointing rookie season. The second-round draft pick out of Ohio State had nine catches for 115 yards and a touchdown in 10 games before injuring his right knee. He had been on active/PUP since the start of training camp.
By being putting on reserve/PUP, Smith can't practice or play with the Jets for the first six weeks of the season. The team then would have a three-week window to decide whether to activate him or have him sit out the rest of the season.
Martin, who kicked field goals of 55 and 29 yards against the Giants on Saturday night, was 4 of 6 on attempts after being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Duke.
Guard Jarvis Harrison, a fifth-rounder last year, was among the other cuts Sunday. Also released were: linebacker Deion Barnes, offensive tackle Jesse Davis, center Kyle Friend, defensive linemen Shelby Harris and Helva Matungulu, running backs Lache Seastrunk and Terry Williams, tight end Jason Vander Laan and wide receiver Kyle Williams.
The moves put the Jets' roster at 78 players. They must get down to the mandatory 75 by Tuesday. Final cuts are Saturday, when teams must set their 53-player rosters.
