Report: Cowboys lock up Witten

The Dallas Cowboys signed Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten to a five-year, $37 million contract extension Sunday to keep him with the franchise through 2017, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Witten, 29, worked late into Saturday night to reach an agreement with the Cowboys, ahead of Sunday's regular season opener at the New York Jets.

The contract, which includes $19 million guaranteed, effectively commits him to the team for the rest of his career.

The agreement came two days after the Cowboys signed nose tackle Jay Ratliff to a five-year, $40 million contract extension.

"I am blessed to say that I will retire a cowboy!" Witten tweeted Sunday.

Witten was a third-round selection in the 2003 NFL draft. He had two years left on his current deal before signing the extension.
