Mr. Irrelevant may turn out to be very relevant for Titans

The Tennessee Titans drafted Southern Miss cornerback Kalan Reed with the 253rd and final pick Saturday, making him Mr. Irrelevant of this year's NFL Draft.

And if to hammer home his label, after the Titans announced Reed as the pick, his Mr. Irrelevant jersey was unveiled at the draft ... and because they got the pick from Denver, it was a Broncos jersey.

Welp, the Titans quickly fixed that.

But he may, in fact, be very relevant to the Titans: Pro Football Focus ranked Reed the No. 54 overall prospect on their board.

Reed, 5-11 and 192 pounds, was a first-team All-Conference USA selection last season. He had 56 tackles and four interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns, along with a school-record 19 pass break-ups. His draft stock shot up after he ran a 4.38-second 40 and measured a vertical leap of 41½ inches at his pro day.

And if Reed has any concerns about making the final roster as the last player selected, he can look to Titans kicker Ryan Succop, Mr. Irrelevant of the 2009 draft.

Being drafted by the Titans is extra special to Reed, who says he started playing football while living in Nashville for part of his childhood.

“That was my team growing up,” Reed told titansonline.com. “Now, I am a Titan."

And some draft analysts seem to think he can be an impact player.

“He’s a very good movement player,” GM Jon Robinson told the Tennessean. “Very good ball skills. Another productive player on the football.”

The Titans, who traded away the top pick, will have the past two Heisman Trophy winners on the roster after selecting Alabama running back Derrick Henry with the No. 45 overall pick. The 2015 winner joins quarterback Marcus Mariota, the No. 2 overall pick and 2014 Heisman winner.
