'Unlikely' Mets break up stable of young starters this offseason

The New York Mets' talented young pitching rotation was on full display this past postseason. While their trade value only increased in October, the Mets say they aren't looking to cash in on their stock this offseason.

Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Steven Matz formed quite a formidable rotation this postseason, and will be joined by righty Zack Wheeler in the middle of next season. With such a solid rotation in place, the Mets have the foundation to become a powerhouse in the NL East.

"I can't see it happening," general manager Sandy Alderson said of dealing one of his young starters. "You never know what comes up, but I think it's unlikely."

Assistant general manager John Ricco said the core four of Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard, and Matz have been a "hot commodity" during the offseason; however, the Mets don't necessarily have any needs that would require them to part ways with any of them for a big return.

"Our holes, I don't think, are as glaring as they were," said Ricco. "That's not to say we can't improve. We certainly have to improve and be better next year."

As they search for the right solution to fill those holes, however sizable they may be, the Mets will continue to communicate with other teams and find a worthwhile deal.

"I would expect we'll have conversations," Ricco said. "As to whether we do anything, I don't think we're far enough along yet to know what the overall plans are."
