Calgary Flames Make Bid in Alex Ovechkin Trade Breeze

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 3:51 p.m. ET

NHL Fans, Especially Washington Capitals Fans, Would All Probably Laugh Off the Rumor of Trading Washington's Star, Alexander Ovechkin, But the Laughable Idea Might Have Some Ground. Rumors Say That the Calgary Flames Are the First Team to Make a Bid For Ovi.

Alex Ovechkin is known, by everyone, as the star of the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin has always been regarded as one of the NHL's best players and has been prized in Washington, but that isn't enough to definitively rule out a trade.

The Capitals have recently revealed that there is currently no player who is safe from being traded. Washington wants to win and the desire to take home the Stanley Cup outweighs the need for the star forward. Not to mention, despite Ovechkin's star status, he has yet to bring the team the Stanley Cup, so, perhaps they might try winning it without him.

Calgary Flames Make Offer

In the midst of the revelation that the Capitals would consider moving their star player, the Calgary Flames step in to make their first bid for the NHL great.

According to the Delfi website, a Russian news site where the rumor was revealed, the Flames reportedly offered the Capitals d-man Oliver Kylington, center Sam Bennett and two first round picks in exchange for Ovechkin.

It is believed that Capitals GM Brian McLellan denied the offer and expects a big deal in order for him to feel comfortable enough to move their star player. Obviously, the Capitals are at an advantage and, if they traded Ovechkin, would want a blockbuster trade if they were to move their captain.

Can it Happen?

Trading your star player might seem like a bad idea for any team with a player as incredible as Ovechkin, but the Capitals are in a rut and desperately want to improve their team. Moving Ovechkin might not be the answer but the potentially huge return might be what Washington needs to mix it up and get going.

Regardless, the Capitals will have the be extremely satisfied with their return if they were to pull the trigger on an Ovechkin trade. Personally, I don't believe moving the forward will create a better team, but I do believe that the Capitals need to make some changes moving forward.

The team has always been extremely talented, but they need something a little different to get to that Stanley Cup.
