Mark Brunell: Robert Griffin III has 'gone backwards'

Published Jun. 30, 2015 3:12 p.m. ET

Small in stature and incredibly quick with the ability to make throws on the run--this is how you would describe former Pro Bowl quarterback Mark Brunell. These are also the words many expected they would be able to use to describe Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III after his dynamic rookie season. Since that season, Griffin has struggled, and he's losing support fast.

On Monday, Brunell joined ESPN's NFL Live show to discuss what went wrong with Griffin during the 2014 season.

There were a series of things that were wrong with RGIII, and it really starts with his fundamentals,” Brunell said on ESPN, per the Washington Post. “Unfortunately for the young quarterback, he has gone backwards.”

After Brunell went on to deliver an explanation for his points using examples from Griffin's 2014 game tape, the show's host, Stephen A. Smith, asked Brunell if RGIII is good enough to succeed at the NFL level. Brunell's response was not very promising, to say the least.

“I do not,” Brunell said. “From what I’ve seen the last couple of years — listen, he burst onto the scene and that was impressive — but like I said, he has gone backwards. It’s not just his decision-making, it’s his fundamentals. He’s taking too many hits, he’s quick to get out of the pocket. Last year was difficult to watch. Does he have the skill set? Yes, but we haven’t seen it in some time.”

All the reports on Griffin's development throughout spring practices have been positive. However, we won't get a real grasp on his improvement until the bodies start flying during live action.
