'Radioactive' from Talladega: 'We've got some clowns up here'

Always one of the most entertaining pieces put together each week on the “NASCAR Race Hub” show, check out this week’s edition of “Radioactive” after a wild Chase elimination race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Drivers, crew chiefs and spotters alike were in rare form as car sliced and diced for position much of the day at ‘Dega.

“We got some clowns up here at the front, man. Not used to being up here,” noted Brett Griffin, spotter for the No. 15 HScott Motorsports team of Clint Bowyer, apparently forgetting for the moment that his driver hasn’t exactly been up there much this season.

And not all the cars sliced and diced for position much of the day, either. The three Joe Gibbs Racing cars of drivers Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards headed immediately for the back, where there only goal was to avoid trouble and advance to the next round of the Chase playoffs.

It apparently wasn’t very exciting for those drivers.

“Man, a Snickers bar does sound pretty good right about now,” Edwards said over his team radio early on.

Shortly thereafter, massive trouble struck for Chase favorite Martin Truex Jr. and his No. 78 Furntiture Row Racing team.

“I got a tire issue or something. I smell it. We’re going to blow up,” Truex Jr. told his team shortly before his car – and his Chase chances – went up in smoke.

Then there was eventual winner Joey Logano taking a jack out of his pit stall and riding all the way around the track with it underneath his No. 22 Team Penske Ford.

Chad Knaus, crew chief for the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team of driver Jimmie Johnson, took note of it all.

“It’s been exciting over here for us,” Knaus said over the team radio. “We’ve had the 22 pull his jack all the way around the racetrack. I think the 11 (of Denny Hamlin) had a (pit-road speeding) penalty, the 78 (of Truex) just blew up.

“This is great. Ratings are up.”
