Red Sox suddenly cancel David Ortiz bobblehead hours before the game

Published Nov. 15, 2016 3:07 p.m. ET

The Red Sox's highly anticipated Big Papi bobblehead giveaway that was scheduled for Tuesday night's game against the Yankees has hit a snag and won't go off as planned.

Just hours before gates were scheduled to open at Fenway Park, the team tweeted out a statement announcing that the David Ortiz bobbleheads would not be distributed later in the evening because they were "unacceptable to the club."

The decision appeared to be last-minute, considering the Red Sox had previously tweeted out a photo of the bobblehead Monday afternoon to promote the giveaway.

The team did not go into detail about what exactly was wrong with the bobbleheads, but a number of photos of the flawed figures surfaced on Twitter from various media members and people who received the bobblehead ahead of the promotion.

Ortiz, who has spent the past 14 seasons with Boston, announced last November that he would retire following the 2016 season, prompting the Red Sox to schedule several promotions to honor the fan favorite.
