Redskins GM wants Kirk Cousins around long-term, undecided on RG3

Kirk Cousins has got to like that.

Washington Redskins general manager Scott McCloughan was at the Senior Bowl on Wednesday and told reporters that he would rather sign his starting quarterback to a long-term deal. Cousins' deal expires at season's end and he would be free to sign with another team.

And while using the franchise tag on Cousins is an option, it's one that McCloughan doesn't necessarily want to use.

"Going forward, of course we'd like to have him around. The philosophy with me and the organization is we won't talk contract stuff with the media," McCloughan told reporters. "But I want him to be part of the Redskins."

However, while the talk about Cousins is all well and good, the Redskins  have only one quarterback under contract for 2016: Robert Griffin III. However, his contract is only guaranteed if he suffers an injury.

So, what's the deal? There's no way that RG3 will still be around next season, right? McCloughan said he could "certainly" see a situation where Griffin will remain with the team, but let's be real. All signs point to the team cutting him loose.

"The thing that's good about where we're at right now is we have until March 9" to release Griffin, McCloughan said, via the Associated Press.

So, while no moves have been made yet, RG3 should probably keep his eyes open for a new home.
