Report: Ryan Tannehill faces possible reconstructive ACL surgery

Published Dec. 18, 2016 9:35 a.m. ET

The Miami Dolphins nearly saw their season crumble before their eyes last week when Ryan Tannehill went down with a significant knee injury. The next day, it was revealed that he had a sprain and didn’t tear his ACL or MCL. That was obviously great news, but it didn’t bring him out of the woods just yet.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Dolphins are going to see how Tannehill responds to rest and rehab. If his condition doesn’t improve, he could undergo reconstructive surgery on his ACL.

As it stands right now, there’s no guarantee he’ll be back this season – “very uncertain,” according to Rapoport. Any injury that involves the ACL and MCL is a fairly serious one that typically keeps a player – namely a quarterback – out for weeks, if not months. If Tannehill does undergo surgery, it would certainly end his season, removing the possibility that he could return for a potential playoff run.

The Dolphins’ handling of this injury is certainly something to watch. Matt Moore played fairly well on Saturday night, throwing for 236 yards and four touchdowns on just 18 attempts. He also had an interception, but his passer rating was an outstanding 126.2.

It’s possible the Dolphins could make a run in the playoffs with Moore as their quarterback, but having Tannehill out there would obviously be a huge lift. They just have to balance the risk and reward, considering the fragility of the injury and the possibility of doing more damage.
