Geno Smith hurt, Ryan Fitzpatrick enters the game

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith hurt his right knee against the Baltimore Ravens. This has forced Ryan Fitzpatrick into the game for the Jets.

The New York Jets are one of the worst teams in the NFL at 1-5 through their first six games. Head coach Todd Bowles benched starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in favor of backup Geno Smith before the Week 6 home game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Smith had a great touchdown pass to Quincy Enunwa early in this game. However, Smith had to exit the game with an injured right knee in the second quarter. That forced Bowles’ hand and he had to put Fitzpatrick into the game down 13-7 to the Ravens.

Quarterback play has been the biggest issue for the 2016 Jets. Fitzpatrick has thrown more than his fair share of terrible interceptions. These picks lead to his benching on Monday Night Football in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals. Smith hasn’t played well in his four years in the NFL, but has earned the right to replace an ineffective Fitzpatrick to lead this Jets offense.

The Jets are one of the few teams in the NFL to have four quarterbacks on their roster: Fitzpatrick, Smith, Bryce Petty, and Christian Hackenberg. Petty has been dealing with injuries for the first part of the year, not to mention that he played in an Air Raid offense in college. Hackenberg was once the No. 1 pro-style pass in his high school graduating class. However, his three years at Penn State were underwhelming to say the least.

Bowles has to get this quarterback situation right and he has to do it fast. He went 10-6 in his first season as a head coach in 2015. If the Jets continue to nosedive, it is unlikely that owner Woody Johnson will give him a third year to lead his AFC football team.
