When is WWE Royal Rumble 2017?

During the WWE Roadblock: End of the Line pay-per-view on Sunday night, WWE announced when the 2017 Royal Rumble would be taking place to kick off the road to WrestleMania 33.

There are four big pay-per-views each year for WWE: WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Survivor Series and Royal Rumble in January.

The Rumble signifies that the road to WrestleMania has officially began, with the winner getting a title match in the main event of the biggest show of the year a couple months later.

It’s become a show of surprises, shocking finishes and arguably the most exciting match of every year: the 30-man, over-the-top-rope Royal Rumble match.

So, with the hype surrounding the match and the show itself, when is the 2017 edition of Royal Rumble? Thanks to the Roadblock pay-per-view from Sunday night, we now have our answer.

For the first time since Shawn Michaels defeated Sycho Sid to win the WWE Championship in 1998, the Alamodome will host the Royal Rumble event.

On that night, Michaels became the champion once more, while Stone Cold Steve Austin won his first of three Royal Rumble matches, despite being eliminated by Bret Hart. (Stuff got weird after that, and The Undertaker would win the WrestleMania main event over Sycho Sid after Michaels had to vacant the gold due to injury.)

The final Sunday night in January should make for a quite a night, as Goldberg and Brock Lesnar are both not only confirmed for the show, but they’re already entered into the Royal Rumble match.

What will the first of the “Big Four” pay-per-view bring next month? Could we see John Cena return to primetime in the Royal Rumble match and earn a shot at world title No. 16?

How about Lesnar and Goldberg? After Goldberg’s shocking win over Lesnar at Survivor Series, could The Beast Incarnate be looking for revenge in one of the biggest matches of the year?
