ORONO, Maine (AP) The women's basketball coach at the University of Maine is taking an indefinite medical leave.

UMaine announced Richard Barron's leave Friday. The university says Barron will be replaced by Amy Vachon, an associate head coach in her sixth season on the staff.

UMaine did not reveal the nature of Barron's medical condition. He says he's on medication that has side effects that interfere with coaching and he feels it is in the team's best interests for him to take leave.

Barron is in his sixth season as head coach of the team and owns an 85-89 record over that time. The Black Bears won back-to-back America East regular season championships under Barron's leadership.

Vachon's first game leading the team will be Saturday at Cross Insurance Center against Maryland-Baltimore County.
