Badgers top first-place St. Cloud State

One night after blowing a 2-1 lead in the third period, the No. 14 University of Wisconsin hockey team once again was up 2-1 going into the final period. This time, however, the Badgers would not relinquish the lead and took down No. 8 St. Cloud State, 3-2, in the WCHA regular-season finale.
Wisconsin -- which finished tied for fourth place in the WCHA, four points behind co-champions St. Cloud State and Minnesota -- got on the board less than a minute into the first period when Frankie Simonelli redirected a shot from Jake McCabe and lit the lamp. The lead would not last long, though, with the Huskies responding less than a minute later.
Michael Mersch gave the Badgers the lead once again, scoring a backhander with just over seven minutes remaining in the first period, a lead that would last until the dying moments of the game.
Wisconsin doubled its lead with 48.7 seconds remaining as Mersch scored his 22nd goal of the season, this time on an empty net. The Huskies once again pulled on back, waiting only 16 seconds, but it was not enough as the Badgers held on for the victory.
The win gives Wisconsin home-ice advantage in the first round when the WCHA playoffs begin next weekend.
