Newcastle United's Daryl Murphy did not Impress me
Daryl Murphy, Newcastle United’s newest signing up front turned some heads in Newcastle United’s EFL match against Wolverhampton.
Daryl Murphy was on everybody’s radar as he made his debut in Newcastle’s EFL cup matchup against Wolverhampton Wanderers as the club looked to invoke revenge after losing to the Wolves last weekend.
While Murphy had a good debut, I consider a great debut one where the debutant scores. But Murphy did not do that. He had great touches on the ball, but the real stars were Matt Ritchie and Yoan Gouffran.

Newcastle United have a lot of competition for the top striker position, with Ayoze Perez, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dwight Gayle all vying for their names on the team sheet’s starting lineup. I do not think that Murphy did enough to gain a starting position in the club’s upcoming match.
Of course, fans will disagree with me as you can see in HITC’s string of fan reactions to Murphy’s performance. Don’t get me wrong, however, Daryl Murphy is an experienced striker. He has extensive Championship experience, and he can help mentor a striking lineup full of youthful players.
I initially did not like the signing of Daryl Murphy as I don’t think he’s bringing anything long term to this club. I think the club will get promoted just fine without him on their list of players to pay weekly wages. It’s not a knock on his ability, but his age and what he can bring to the club.

We’ve been seeing great things from Dwight Gayle. He’s the best striker that the club has right now. We have amazing midfielders and wingers with Matt Ritchie, Yoan Gouffran (?), and even Jack Colback is providing some much needed offense.
Where does Daryl Murphy fit in all this? For me, it’s the bench. I like squad rotation, but we have better players to rotate than Murphy.
