Liverpool: Klopp tells Sturridge exactly how he needs to be

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Jurgen Klopp wants Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge to stay greedy ahead of their match against Chelsea.

Greed: It’s not typically a value many positively associate with others in everyday walks of life, but football is different. And strikers, as they say, are their own breed.

Jurgen Klopp wants Daniel Sturridge to be greedy. It seems an odd thing to say at face value, because Sturridge has gotten stick before for being too selfish but Klopp was also very quick to applaud the rest of the striker’s game in Liverpool’s 4-1 win against Leicester City, in which he didn’t score.

“Staying greedy. The movements were brilliant,” said Klopp, via Liverpool Echo. “Daniel was involved in three or four goals. For the first one, it was a brilliant run. Roberto (Firmino) can make exactly the same run but if Daniel hadn’t made that run he wouldn’t have been free. Being that flexible is the key for all games.”

There’s the important part. Sturridge may not have scored, but he was involved in a few goals. (He was not on the pitch for the fourth, so, maybe he shouted ‘HE’S COMING!’ to Sadio Mane when Kasper Schmeichel kamikaze’d out to midfield?)

Klopp was very quick to say that Sturridge also needs to be flexible.

“We had other times when Leicester had six or seven players around the box and we still found a solution. That’s what you have to create,” said Klopp. “All games are different. Leicester give you a lot of questions and their counter-attacking game is outstanding. You need to be even quicker in your mind than with your legs.”

Leicester share similar qualities that Chelsea may try and deploy, like sitting deep.

“They defend really deep and try to disturb your build up,” said Klopp. “It was important we found the situations we found. We had 10 minutes where we made the wrong decisions. I only speak about this now because it will be very important against Chelsea.”

Defending will be key for Liverpool. The attack is sorted, it’s about the defense.

“We didn’t defend their No 6 as well as we did before,” said Klopp. “Our positioning was wrong. There were a lot of things we could have done better. Not to score more goals but to feel more secure in all situations. That’s the challenge for us. It’s about timing – doings the right thing in the right moment.”
