Young Badgers Tracker: Many freshmen make Wisconsin debuts

Published Sep. 14, 2016 3:15 p.m. ET

It's time for another edition looking at the playing time and statistics of the younger players on the roster of the Wisconsin Badgers.

Akron is no LSU, and for that reason we saw a lot of players make their collegiate debut. Seven freshmen who didn't play against the Tigers in Week 1 saw the field in Week 2 vs. the Zips (and one, safety Eric Burrell, played the opener but not last week).

Among the notables who saw action was quarterback Alex Hornibrook, who probably couldn't have put up much of a better day statistically, and punter Anthony Lotti.

Also, freshmen wide receiver Quintez Cephus and A.J. Taylor recorded their first receptions while redshirt freshman running back Bradrick Shaw ran for his first touchdown.

With Georgia State on tap in Week 3, expect more playing time for the freshmen. But for those who don't get in, will it be their last shot?

Here's the complete rundown:

Have not played; Kevin Estes, OL; Mitchell Herl, TE; Zach Hintze, K; Henry Houden, WR; Kraig Howe, DE; Troy Laufenberg, RB; Blake Mielke, S; David Plaff, DE; Max Praschak, OLB; Gunner Roberge, NT; Kelly Thomas, DE; Nick Thomas, ILB; Bret Verstegen, S; Jake Whalen, OLB
