Blackhawks defenseman Cumiskey inks one-year deal

Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Kyle Cumiskey signed a one-year contract on Thursday.

Financial terms were not disclosed in the deal, which was released by the team.

Cumiskey, who has been sidelined with a lower-body injury, is expected to compete with David Rundblad, Trevor van Riemsdyk and Viktor Svedberg for one of the two spots on the team's third defensive pairing. Reigning Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Niklas Hjalmarsson and veteran Trevor Daley occupy the top four spots.

Cumiskey failed to record a point in seven regular-season games in 2014-15 as well as nine postseason contests. The 28-year-old British Columbia native collected two goals and 18 assists in 54 contests with Rockford of the American Hockey League last season.

A seventh-round selection in the 2005 draft, Cumiskey has scored nine goals and set up 26 others in 139 career contests with the Colorado Avalanche and Blackhawks.
