Deshazor Everett Avoids Suspension After Vicious Hit On Darren Sproles

Deshazor Everett put a monster hit on Darren Sproles this weekend. It is expected that he could possibly be fined, but he will not be facing a suspension.

The Washington Redskins got some good news on Tuesday afternoon. Reports came out in regards to their special teams ace and backup safety, Deshazor Everett. After putting a massive, illegal hit on Darren Sproles this past weekend, the safety was expected to be reprimanded by the league for his hit. According to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, he will not be suspended. The news came out via Maske’s Twitter account.

Maske went on to say that Everett probably was going to get fined in a tweet later on.

The Redskins have to feel lucky that Everett was not suspended. The team is very thin at the safety position right now, and whether or not Will Blackmon will be ready to play this week remains to be seen. If the team had been without Everett, they may have had to add another safety who is not familiar with the playbook. That could have been a disaster, especially if Blackmon were to miss another game.

In terms of the actual hit, Everett certainly deserves some sort of punishment. Granted, many are claiming that Sproles was at fault for dropping to a knee and not calling for a fair catch, but Everett definitely deserves the blame. The fact remains that Everett came screaming down the field and hit Sproles before he had a chance to catch the ball. It could have just been bad timing, but he did lay a blow on Sproles’ head, and it was a helmet to helmet hit.

Also complicating the matter is the fact that Everett put a late hit on Brent Celek earlier in the game. Celek suffered a stinger and never returned. Because of this, Everett already had a target on his back and was probably being closely watched by the officials. Even if the call was borderline, he would have had a tough time getting the benefit of the doubt for the officials.

At the end of the day, the Redskins cannot be too upset with this result. Everett is going to be able to play on Monday night, and that is what matters for the team. He may have to pay the price with a fine later in the week, and we will keep an eye on what discipline he faces later on.
