Mets ace Harvey 'on board' with decision to skip Sunday's start

The New York Mets ace Matt Harvey on Friday said he was agreeable to skipping Sunday's scheduled start against the Colorado Rockies.

“The innings are adding up — we have kind of been discussing that the whole time," Harvey said Friday. "I told them I was completely on board with whatever they wanted to do. I just kind of preferred it would be sooner rather than later.”

Reliever Logan Verrett, called up from Triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the week, will take the place of Harvey, who is 36 innings shy of reaching the 190-inning season limit mandated by the team.

Mets manager Terry Collins said he expects it to be the only start Harvey will miss the rest of the way. The 26-year-old Harvey is scheduled to return to the rotation for next Friday's home game against the Boston Red Sox.

The Mets have said all along that they plan to have Harvey and rookie Noah Syndergaard skip starts to help keep their innings down and ensure their availability down the stretch.

New York also is expected to go to a six-man rotation once rookie left-hander Steven Matz comes off the 15-day disabled list. Matz had a rehab start at Class A St. Lucie on Friday night, allowing one run on four hits over 2 2/3 innings while throwing 25 of 41 pitches for strikes.
