Dee Gordon hits leadoff home run moments after team pays tribute to Jose Fernandez

Moments after the Marlins and Mets remembered Jose Fernandez before their game on Monday night, infielder Dee Gordon led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer to right, his first of the season.

Gordon, wearing Fernandez’s No. 16 jersey on his back, just as his entire team did on Monday, popped one into the seats and immediately became teary as he rounded the bases. He was met with a warm embrace in the Marlins dugout.

Fernandez was killed in a boating accident on Sunday morning along with his two friends. He was 24.
