Ashton Eaton successfully defended his Olympic decathlon title to secure his title as the "world's greatest athlete" at the Rio Games on Friday.

He is the first man to repeat as decathlon champion since 1984.

Eaton came in first in the final 1,500-meter heat with a season-best 4:23.33 to win with 8893 total points, tying an Olympic record.

France's Kevin Mayer, who gave Eaton late chase in the javelin, finished in second for silver.

Damian Warner of Canada finished third.

This happened just days after Eaton's wife, Brianne Theisen-Eaton, won bronze at the Games in the heptathlon for Canada. Together, do they make the world's greatest athletic couple?
