Washington Redskins: Loudoun County would reap rewards of new stadium

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 5:58 p.m. ET

With roughly 375,000 residents, Loudoun County could capitalize from a new Washington Redskins stadium.

If Loudoun County wanted to secure its spot as the "second capital" of Virginia, becoming the site for a new Washington Redskins stadium seals the deal. With Richmond already the hub for the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center, the Commonwealth would become the official home of the Redskins.

The landscape would change, but only in the marketing. In other words, FedEx Field would just host more events. This is where it gets interesting.

Venture over to the FedEx Field webpage and you'll see that life without football isn't going to hurt anything that's going on there. On July 26, the stadium hosts a soccer game between Manchester United and Barcelona, two of the biggest clubs in the world. Music icons Coldplay will be making a stop there Aug. 6 as part of their A Head Full of Dreams Tour.  In September, the stadium will serve as neutral ground for a college football game between Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

With additions such as these to the economic stream, Loudoun County could rule Northern Virginia with a new stadium. The opportunity for revenue beyond Redskins games is enormous.

For starters, small businesses would be able to capitalize from the brand in a more profound way. Travel to Richmond during Redskins training tamp, and you'll see what I'm talking about. It's packed. You've got to park blocks away if you're not early.

Two years ago, Chantalle Edmunds of the Loudoun Times wrote an excellent piece on the good and bad aspects of a new stadium in the area. Loudoun County Supervisor Matt Letourneau (R-Dulles), chairman of the board's economic development committee, was quoted saying that he was interested in exploring how the county could land a  the stadium, citing a chance at "significant tax revenue".

Though this idea is still far in the distance, there's nothing like securing your spot. When it comes to property, location is everything.
