San Francisco LB Willis leaves with toe injury
ST. LOUIS — San Francisco linebacker Patrick Willis left the 49ers' 33-17 win over the Rams on Monday in the third quarter with a left toe injury and spent the rest of the game on the sideline in a walking boot.
Willis, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, leads the 49ers with 44 tackles this season and leads the NFL in tackles over the past seven seasons. He had three more before leaving Monday's game. Rookie Chris Borland replaced him.
The Niners already are without fellow linebackers NaVorro Bowman, who was hurt in last season's NFC championship game, and Aldon Smith, who's serving a suspension. Now Willis is in doubt for Sunday's game against Denver. The extent of his injury has not been announced.
Starting left guard Mike Iupati also walked to the locker room at the end of the third quarter after he was slow to get up on a Frank Gore run in the final 2 minutes of the period. He was being examined for a concussion, the team announced.
Wide receiver Stevie Johnson, who left the game after a hard fall, said X-rays didn't reveal any damage and is optimistic for next Sunday. Tight end Vernon Davis, who returned from a back injury, played but still was experiencing discomfort.
