NFL power rankings: Chiefs slide after bad loss

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 2:04 a.m. ET

The Kansas City Chiefs predictably fell in the NFL power rankings after losing in the final second to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon.

Let’s be real, the Chiefs are better than the Titans. They should have won that game a thousand times out of a thousand. Yet, here we are, dealing with one of the most ridiculous losses in the past decade. When you consider the history of this team, that’s really saying something.

So where does the rest of the world rank the Chiefs after that abomination? Let’s take a look…

Are the Chiefs a faux contender? They have great wins and big stars, but that loss to Tennessee was not something a great team suffers in December.

Glowing record, glaring concern in Kansas City right now. The blueprint for the Chiefs in the second half the season was to get their pass rushers healthy, run the football and then use the home-field advantage as the first or second seed to be a serious contender. Well, Justin Houston and Dee Ford are back and the running game is doing alright … but playing at Arrowhead Stadium hasn’t been much of an advantage at all. The Chiefs barely escaped with a win over the punchless Jags in early November, sputtered in a home defeat to the Bucs two weeks later and lost again Sunday against what most analysts feel is an inferior team (Tennessee). Maybe not. The offense has averaged just 17.7 points per game in those three home games. Not gonna cut it.

ESPN.com – 6

The Chiefs have lost only four times this season, and in three of those losses they allowed exactly 19 points. When the offense shows, the Chief are hard to beat. A win Sunday against the Broncos will clinch a playoff berth for the second straight season.

It’s hard to rip a team too much for a last-second loss and call it a terrible loss after it has won eight of nine. But that was a terrible loss on Sunday to Tennessee. It could be the difference between a first-round bye and a home game and having to go on the road for wild-card weekend.

In their past three home games, they’ve lost two. That’s weird for the Chiefs with Denver coming to town.

Washington Post – 5

Just when the Chiefs were looking like a real Super Bowl threat, they slipped up Sunday at home against the Titans. They’re still almost certainly headed to the playoffs. But if it’s as a wild-card team instead of as a division winner and the AFC’s No. 2 seed, that is a far, far different equation.

The biggest surprise of the weekend was Tennessee beating the Chiefs at Arrowhead. They were fortunate to get another shot at winning the game after failing on their two-point try with three minutes left, but Ryan Succop did them in. The Chiefs looked pedestrian and inconsistent on offense outside of a huge play by Tyreek Hill.
