NFL insider: Conditions 'simply aren't right' for an Adrian Peterson trade

Published May. 27, 2015 1:30 p.m. ET

John Clayton, an NFL senior writer for ESPN, shot down a snowballing rumor that the Minnesota Vikings might trade running back Adrian Peterson, outlining four reasons why he won't be dealt to another team before the 2015 season.

Clayton's No. 1 reason why a trade won't go down is because Minnesota still needs Peterson to help bring along second-year quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Imagine the success Bridgewater could have experienced as a rookie if Peterson played more than one game in 2014.

Clayton says the realistic trade window passed with the draft, adding that Minnesota's asking price is probably too high. In the end, Peterson's only recourse may be retirement.

"The only way Peterson isn't playing for the Vikings this fall is if he chooses to retire—something he has considered, according to what he told ESPN.com's Ben Goessling," Clayton wrote as his bottom line. "But retiring would be forgoing a huge payday when the season starts, and the conditions simply aren't right for him to move in a trade."
