Jets coach Todd Bowles sounds unsure Geno Smith will be the backup QB

Had the New York Jets not re-signed Ryan Fitzpatrick this offseason, Geno Smith likely would have been the starter in Week 1. Now, he may not even be the primary backup.

In two preseason games, Smith has completed just 14-of-27 passes for 126 yards and one touchdown with one interception. By no means are those stellar numbers and his performance thus far may lead the Jets to move on from the fourth-year quarterback.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles was mum on the Jets’ backup situation on Sunday, dodging a question about Smith being No. 2 on the depth chart.

"Right now, they're all playing and we're trying to see who sorts out what," Bowles said, via NJ.com.

Bowles didn’t endorse Smith as the backup right now, which leaves the door open for Petty to win the job. If that were to happen, it would be somewhat surprising, but not a complete shock.

Smith has had a rough go of it with the Jets, from throwing 21 picks as a rookie to being punched in the jaw last season, ultimately losing him the starting job to Fitzpatrick.

He now has some serious competition in Petty with Christian Hackenberg waiting in the wings for years to come.

Bowles still won’t reveal the Jets’ plan, despite acknowledging that they have one.

"All of them have got to be up to play," Bowles said. "We've got a plan for the quarterbacks that we're not revealing. Saturday, we'll play the guys that we have scheduled to play. But we do have a plan to play certain people."

Smith could very well be cut before the season, ending his tenure with the Jets one year before his contract was set to expire.
